"As Major Ferguson tried to ride his horse through the ever tightening circle of patriot militiamen, more than a few rifles fired at him and the major fell from his saddle, mortally wounded, the despised Patrick Ferguson was dragged around the hilltop by his panicked horse, a foot caught in the stirrup. The officer second-in-command quickly called for quarters and surrendered. William Campbell, other militia officers and a host of backcountry patriot militiamen surrounded the loyalist army they had just soundly defeated. The hour-long battle was done. . . . "
