Major Patrick Ferguson referred to the Backcountry patriots at "backwater men."

These men coming over the mountains descended the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge, dividing into two groups so they could thwart any attempt Ferguson might make to come up one path while they went down the other. The groups camped the night of Sept. 29 at North Cove and at Turkey Cove, both along the North Fork Catawba valley.
